NEW MASSES - VARIOUS ARTICLES BY SOLMAN, 1946-1947
New Masses was the principal periodical of the American cultural left from 1926 onwards. The magazine featured reportage, poetry, art and fiction, and sponsored the John Reed Club, and American Writers and Artists Congresses. Solman wrote a number of articles for the magazine in its later years which are compiled here.
REALITY - A JOURNAL OF ARTISTS' OPINIONS - NUMBER 1, NEW YORK, SPRING 1953
The first edition of a short journal with a huge list of contributing artists including Milton Avery, Philip Evergood, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Reginald Marsh, John Sloan (one of the last acts of John Sloan before his death was to join the Group) and Joseph Solman. Articles include a letter to the MoMA, a piece on Humanism in Art, an extract of a speech made by Jack Levine at MoMA and short statements by four of the artists including Edward Hopper and Joseph Solman.
REALITY - A JOURNAL OF ARTISTS' OPINIONS, NUMBER 2, NEW YORK, SPRING 1954
The 2nd edition of this artist produced journal. This edition includes short articles by Max Weber and Isabel Bishop, an obituary for Kuniyoshi, an article on art education by Maurice Grosser and on the latest art styles by Philip Evergood, a reaction to ‘Action Painters’, plenty of letters and short statements from Oscar Kokoschka and Matta.
